Bro. Theron Dunn suffers renal failure, in grave condition

The Burning Taper joins with other Masons throughout the blogosphere and The Real World in sending our best wishes and hopes for a speedy recovery to our brother Theron Dunn.

He suffered kidney failure on Friday night, and is as of this writing reported to be in grave condition, with some slight improvement overnight. Details can be found on Bro. Chris Hodapp's blog Freemasons for Dummies, and I hope he and others will keep us up-to-date on Bro. Theron's condition.

Bro. Dunn is the publisher of both an online magazine and a blog dedicated to Freemasonry, and is a moderator on several Masonic forums. He is a past master of his California blue lodge.

We also wish Bro. Chris a speedy recovery from his recent surgery.

Relishing in the misery and suffering of others?

    How very brotherly of you.

Only a truly bent and twisted soul would take it down to that level.

Trust me - however this turns out for Brother Dunn, your shallow and callous offering will return to you tenfold.

    Karma works like that.

  4. Karma??!!

    T. Ron, shouldn't you be worrying about your own trials involving your own karma?

For this comment, as well as the other slop that continuously from that gaping maw of yours, you confirm once more that you are a sad example of a man, much less a Freemason. Good thing you've already been expelled.

Please enjoy the remainder of what you call a life groveling for attention on blogs.

With that one word you have said a million things about yourself, none of them good. Have you no compassion, no sense of brotherhood or brotherly love?

Bro. Dunn has strident and often what seem to many to be narrow, close-minded opinions about Freemasonry and what it is really about, and he has probably started or engaged in more "flame wars" regarding Masonry than just about anyone else online. I've personally bumped heads with him online many times. There is little he has ever written that I agree with; however, one time, an article he wrote did more to advance my understanding of Masonic symbolism than anything I've ever read, anywhere. For that one thing alone, I'll be forever grateful.

He is a brother, and a member of our Masonic fraternity and of our human family, and to judge him, to imply that his illness is retribution for some perceived slight he caused to you or someone else, to publicly kick him when he's down, when he needs our love and compassion more than ever with your comment "Karma?" is the lowest, most vile thing I have seen or heard from a Mason (I assume) in all my days of being a Mason.

Karma is universal, but its actions are personal and internal. A person brings about his own karma, and it is not the place of any person to judge the action of karma in the life events of another.

At times we all fail to live the tenets of Freemasonry — brotherly love, relief and charity/truth, and we, including even you, should be forgiven when we don't achieve these ideals. You, sir, in one single word, gave evidence that in this instance you have not grasped, much less mastered, these basic tenets.

    T. Ron,
Brother Theron and I disaggree on many things. In fact, I seriously doubt that he would ever sit in lodge with me. That said, he is still my brother as Freemasonry teaches universal brotherhood. Your comment sickens me.

I think I speak for all of the brothers of Euclid Lodge when I say that our thoughts and prayers are with Brother Dunn and his family.

Uh, does it matter? This isn't about defaming or defending the "honor" of GOUSA (or MM), it's about a man who is suffering a life-threatening illness. Anything else seems petty in comparison. Let's not lose perspective because of someone's crude comment.

That being said, does anyone know about Dunn's financial situation?? Medical care isn't cheap.

  10. What is needed at this moment is a UNIFICATION of Free-Masons. If ever there was a time for Masons world-wide to united it is now.

Prayers of healing and support for Brother Theron's family is all that matters now.

Brother Theron is MASON in need of our help. Its time to act like we are MASONS.

How terrible that you would post such a terrible thing. Brother Theron is in a terrible state. His family and friends are suffering. Do you write such a thing because he disagreed with you or has defended what he believes to be true in his heart? You Sir should be ashamed of yourself. I have had the great honor of knowing this good man for a number of years. We have worked together on many projects, especially the Child I.D program. He would give the short off his back to help others be they Masons or not. He is a man of honor. He, his family and friends are suffering today. I visited Brother Theron this evening. Each time I look at him or think of him I think of the many contributions he has made to Masonry and Society in general. His family have been awesome and so strong during this terrible time. Since he has taken ill his family has not left his side. They take turns, they sleep on chairs and even on nthe floor to be near their loved one. It is a time that we should pray for Bro. Theron and his family. His love for this fraternity has often touched my heart. Sir, I am in hopes that Bro. Theron will get well and answer your comment himself. Thanks to all who have kept our Brother and his family in our their prayers.

If karma is personal, how can anyone determine if it was not Karma responsible for this?

Brother Theron did wish much ill on the Halcyon Brothers without waiting for evidence.

He wished that Halcyon would receive the full wrath of the courts upon the Brothers of Halcyon.

Instead of waiting and not wishing ill, he jumped on the Lynch Mob Train and wanted blood.

That is an unmasonic act in the first degree.

    Dunce must be a visionary
    or perceptive, maybe...

It is a sad day indeed, but do not worry about Dunce and take a look in the mirror to see if any of you have violated your oaths by wishing ill on Brothers who may be innocent!

In the darkest hour and final moments of this Brother's life you demonstrate, in the most cowardly, anonymous and despicable manner possible, nothing but hate and destruction. It is the most crass illustration possible of your utter disregard for the most basic lesson Freemasonry offers its members. How dare you?

This is the "new" Freemasonry you hold to be superior?

I have said in the past, show us all that your way is better. Prove it by what you build, not by what you destroy or denigrate. Well, what you have built is now seen by the world. You have built in yourselves the character that would take the time to to go out of your way to insult this man, this Brother, on his death bed.

"By their works ye shall know them." Indeed.

The reaction from around the world by literally hundreds of Masons and non-Masons to the news of Theron's illness and death reveal just a tiny portion of how many lives he positively touched, for the most part quietly and without fanfare, as unbelievable as you may seem to find that. Those stories, that Theron never wrote or talked about, are only now coming to light, and they are legion.

So go on kicking and insulting and sneering behind your miserable screen names - the very creation of which were inspired by your own bitterness and hatreds. But for the sake of the fraternity, cease masquerading as Freemasons. For by your own works we now know you to be many things. Just not Freemasons.

Brother Theron's opinion was based on fact. You and your associate verify the conclusion he reached.
Brother Theron was ill and he passed away. G-d did not take him from us because of an opinion or to tske revenge. It is cowardly to post in such a manner. Masonry is beautiful, honest and true. Bro. Theron represented all that was good in our Craft. You Sir expose yourself and your group for what they are. One thing for sure is that your actions and posts are not that of a Mason. Masonry is in what a man does and in all he does. Theron Dunn was a Mason's Mason. G-d gave Bro. Theron to us for a short time. He gave his all and I am honored to have been able to have worked with him, know him and learn from him. We did not always agree but he was a dear friend and Brother.

Dear Sir, "Unmasonic act" you must be joking. When the entire J.P./Halcyon Takeover started Brother Theron gave then the benefit of the doubt. In time their "Un-Masonic" acts surface and almost every Mason that supported them saw the entire bunch for what they are. I remember speaking to Brother Theron after Lodge and he spoke of them as if they were Masons and was kind and Brotherly. Scoundrel!!! "Un-Masonic" are those that steal what is not theirs, con good people to believe they are sincere and attempt to discredit true and honest Masonry. Un-Masonic is posting comments as you and the Dunce have. Of course that is if you were Masons. Masons do not hide who they are and what they represent. Bro. Theron was a dedicated real Mason. The takeover group will eventually lose in the courts because they are wrong. Bro. I have many years experience with those that want to change Masonry to fit their desires and their pocket books and I certainly have experienced what happens when someone disagrees with this band of "Wannabe Masons." Anyone that could say that Bro. Theron was un-Masonic in anthing he ever did or said regarding Masonry is wrong. To do so after his passing is cowardly. I will defend Brother Theron's opinion, his honor and true Masonry here or anywhere. You wanted a rise and you got it. Now go hide behind your rock.

I have seen Bro. Theron evolve as I have and try to do the same each day. This week Masons must be unified that we all have lost a man who has touched many and left his mark upon the fraternity. 23. Those two idiots should be shunned from decent society and Masonry as the insects they are.

I would be interested to know if they ever own up to their remarks and report their real names to the inquiring member of Halcyon Lodge. I doubt they have the guts. But enough said, Bro. Dunn's death should not be marked by their crass and disgusting comments.

  24. Bro. Theron was a good man, good friend, and passionate Freemason. We agreed and disagreed on many issues but we always agreed that brotherhood itself was more important than all the rest combined.

Our hold on life is a mere tenuous thread between heaven and earth. Such a sudden passing should remind us all of our own mortality and the frailness of our mortal composition.

May you rest in peace my brother, we are all not far behind you.

  27. My sincere condolences to Bro:. Dunn's family. I was surprised and shocked to read this tonight.

Oddly enough, last Friday, the same night I believe Bro:. Dunn suffered kidney failure, I had to rush my husband to the emergency room for kidney stones. Excruciating, yes, but one of the "better" reasons I can think of for landing in the emergency room.

I spent the sleepy wee hours of the morning surrounded by people in great distress, and families living through much worse dramas than ours.

At the time, I meditated on the thin line of fortune and fate that we all walk. That lucky line that keeps us upright and disconnected from the IV stand and beeping monitors.

I also knew, with the certainty that comes from sad experience, that one day I'd be back by a hospital bed, saying good bye to someone I love.

At the same time, in another hospital, this very tragedy was unfolding in the Dunn family.

Meanwhile, at the Taper, the potshots and finger wagging began.

    We are all family.

B:. Dunn was a member of my family. I'm not even talking about the Masonic family, I'm talking about the family of humanity.

The lines which divide us from one another are lies.

The disagreements we have, the hurtful things we say to one another, absurd when viewed from sufficient distance.

    Death allows us that distance.

Mourning gives us moments of epiphany.

But as Freemasons, we should walk with the wisdom of mortality every day, instead of dusting it off for funerals.

  28. Just because some of us did not get along with Theron, who IMHO could be annoying, self opinionated, and in many ways extremely foolish, does not stop us ALL from feeling sad for him, his family and his friends after his premature demise.

I have left messages of condolence for his family and for those whom he knew.

It is easy to offer the hand of friendship to those who feel likewise and easily reciprocate. To be kind and courteous to somebody even though he or she does not always respond in kind, is IMHO a true test of character.

Rarely, but more than once in my life, it has paid off and I have been pleasantly surprised.

It is up to his maker to judge Theron, not us, and we can express honestly held views without suggestion of hypocrisy or fear of criticism, but there is a line over which none of us should be allowed to cross.

R.I.P. frail, flawed and foolish Brother, from just another member of The International Brotherhood of the Frail, the Flawed, and the Foolish.

  29. While I never knew Theron, never met him, and only had contact with him through a comment I posted about lodge regularity, what we can all agree with is that he was a Mason to the end.

I read all of your blogs, and usually never comment. I don't participate in the Masonic Pissing Match that goes on, or who's Masonry is better. What is important is that Masonry, whatever flavor you participate in, has principals; one important one is that it is to make good men better.

I believe Theron, his life, masonic career and that of a family man, truly shines as an example of this. He appeared to care for people, was brotherly, and at the same time was strong enough to show his opinions towards others.

The two "karma" comments I read earlier, I won't even give the time of day to respond to. If you were members of any regular Grand Lodge, I would hope charges to be brought upon you.

While I never met Theron, I did enjoy reading his very interesting insights into Masonry; his understanding of symbolism and the likes truly compelled me to dig deeper into Masonic knowledge.

While I never met him, I plan to work much overtime so that I can afford a plane flight to attend his memorial in California. We are all brothers in this, and we have truly lost a great one.

May you rest ever eternally in the cellestial lodge above, Bro. Theron.

And I hope to meet any of you who plan to attend his memorial.

  31. “13 When God judges, he will not be kind to a person who has not been
kind. It is better to be kind than it is to judge people.” (James 2, New Testament).

I've been recently raised to the Degree of Master Mason. Worshipful Blanco is my mentor. One appealing conception of Masonry is the “way we lead our lives”. In dreadful times, where our society, laws, and our lenses placed all simplistic superlative ideals of self into question, we must embrace the opportunity to adhere the “gap” and draw closer.

I strongly support that before a Mason, one is a man (or woman) first. Your heart leads your desires and your commonsensical and logical shifts in paradigms are lead by your conscience. Society plays a part, your actions, your views creates the focus of your decisions.

On the other hand, Masonry is a calling, an in-depth nurtured passion for more… A tool to facilitate your growth… Whether the growth is for dire or encouraging purposes, you choose. The passion for more is for your determination…

Either way... your efforts in progress, will provide the returns...

Is often detrimental, to see man or woman, utilize their conviction, their desires to represent the body or concept of Masonry ( as we read from the comments of the "Karma nuisance"). This is a great example of that.

Brother Dunn, was there when I was raised. We may have shared close to 12 words…

I visited him often, and yet while he was unable to talk, I can see that a fellow Mason who lived for the cause, has fallen.

The fall of a man is not a time to indicate his faults… as some people have indicated. The fall of a man is not to judge his views… as some people have indicated.

The Fall of a man is a lesson of life, a reminder that we are in borrowed times, and that we must stop all “jabbler”…

Man, woman, Mason or Anti-Mason, please remember the ways of why you choose to be what you are.
Remember the passion you felt, values, and why you determined or influence the person you are today…Please hold on to such…
In due time, we will be judge by the way we lead, to "thy own self-be true"…

And for those who referred to Karma… please I strongly suggest that you educate yourself on the concept. Karma alike the millions of utterances around the world, could mean many things…

    However,… I let James 2… to speak to you…

To Worshipful Dunn, you will be missed… actions speak louder than words… Let it such be a testament of our lives…

    Dear Sir,
Respectfully one doesn't need to have been there to see and know what has happened. What has happend at Halcyon is the result of eveil companionship. Kid Sir, it does not take a brain surgeon to see what has gone on resulting in the hostile takeover of a Lodge. This is very simple and basic Freemasonry. The Lodge is under the jurisdiction of Grand Lodge of Ohio. With few members and a ring leader the Lodge and it's property was taken over by a group of men who are not Masons in their heart nor anywhere else. If I take something that is not mine it is stealing and it is wrong. The members were not given due and timely notice. I think you know these things as well or better then I do. The person pulling the strings at that time was a person who had many hoodwinked. Most now see him for what he is and see his personal agenda. One thing for sure is that the action taken by this group of rogue Masons was done in a very calculated manner. Name changes of the Temple Board and other properties, no notification to the members are things that just scrath the surface. There was nothing Masonic in what these people did. UGLA, GOUSA,are but a but a few of the names the governing group has used. The small nucleus of people that were involved in this takeover do not represent the majority of the Lodge. Most members of The GOUSA group while posting good values do not live by the values they write. Most Masons sign their names to their posts and are proud of their Masonic Affiliations. Members of these groups seldom sign their name but use a screen name. This can go on and on. Sir, (Obviously I can't write in your name)please feel free to set the record straight if the owner of this blog would permit. Questions would be: 1. How many members of the real, original Lodge voted on seperating ways and leaving Grand Lodg of Ohio? Was it a majority of the members? Were the members informed at least 30 days before the vote? Were the name changes of the Temple Properties or the Charity involved done before the vote by the few members that were present? Was this entire situation started after Jeff's talk at the Lodge? Was Grand Lodge given due and timely notice that there was going to be a takeover of any kind? The questions can go on and on. Mostly Sir, I find it hard to take anyone seriously that does not sign their name to it. Please do so in your response. I hope I cleared up the doubt you might have had regarding certain members of Halcyon Lodge's un-Masonic takeover. Truth always wins in the end and it will previal in this case as well.

"I do not fear for the sake of my Wife and Children along with myself are targeted by the Grand Lodge of F & A M of Ohio."

I am not quite sure what this means? Grand Lodge (real ones) are made us of very honorable men. They did not wake up one day and say "I am going to be Grand Master or Grand Lodge today." The people that run Grand Lodges have spent many years preparing for their positions. Their Staffs are made up of trained, organized professionals. They are not going to threaten or hurt anyone. To suggest that they would do such a thing is further proof that this group is way out in left field and out of line..

While searching the web for additional information on Halcyon I decided to look on Bro. Ed Kings site Masonicinfo.com . Brother has an informative site that digs deep into truth, honesty and sincerity. He basically tells it like it is. I looked what he had on Halcyon, UGLA (doesn't exist and never was Recognized by any legitimate Masonic Jurisdiction) and it's new name GOUSA as well as some of the other names this group and it's leader called themselves. Bro. Ed would not print something if it were not true and proven. Here is the link to the site.

Best way for everyone is to simply read the facts, do their own research and decide for themselves.

    Sincerely,
    Manny Blanco,PM

  38. Bros. Manny, Sec2, and anyone else who's about to jump into this "whose truth is true?" discussion.

Please take it to the Masonic Corral. I can already tell this ain't gonna be pretty.

I'll probably be jumping into this one myself after reading Bro. Manny's outlandish comments implying that the writings of Ed King and the late Theron Dunn should be considered the final word on "Masonic truth."

  40. Which part of "take it to the Corral" do you not understand?

Rmoahals' comment bashing Bros. Manny, Chris Hodapp and others has been moved to the Masonic Corral Brawl. Future comments along these lines left in this or other threads will be deleted.

If you're gonna fight, do it in the Corral.
