Footloose: Christian school suspends student for attending public school prom

A few weeks ago Toldeo, Ohio's Heritage Christian School principal Tim England suspended 17-year old student Tyler Frost after Frost took his girlfriend Becca to the prom at her neighboring high school. England banned Frost from the Christian school, and would not let him participate in graduation ceremonies.

Frost was warned this would happen. Frost's family has threatened a lawsuit against the school and the principal.

England shared his bizarre reasoning with a television reporter in Toledo before the prom, but has refused to give more on-camera interviews since Tyler and Becca "disobeyed" him.
At a prom, there will be many young ladies who'll be dressed in the current styles, which will be low-cut dresses and things like that. There will be dancing.
Twenty-five years ago, Rev. Shaw Moore, played by John Lithgow, said pretty much the same thing in the film Footloose:
Even if this was not a law, which it is, I'm afraid I would have a lot of difficulty endorsing an enterprise which is as fraught with genuine peril as I believe this one to be. Besides the liquor and the drugs which always seem to accompany such an event the thing that distresses me even more, Ren, is the spiritual corruption that can be involved. These dances and this kind of music can be destructive, and, uh, Ren, I'm afraid you're going to find most of the people in our community are gonna agree with me on this.
Principal England told FoxToledo that Jesus wouldn't approve of Tyler going to the Findlay High School prom with his girlfriend, that Tyler should be more like Jesus.
Christianity is a growing relationship with Jesus Christ, and if you're gonna grow and be more like him, you gotta be obedient to what he says.
Didn't Jesus hang out with the "common people" and not with the pious? Didn't he thumb his nose at the "moral police" of his day, the Pharisees? Didn't he count among his closest confidantes a temple harlot?

Jesus never forbade dancing, best I can tell from my many readings of the Bible. In fact, Jesus's multi-great granddad King David, "wearing a linen ephod, danced before the LORD with all his might, while he and the entire house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouts and the sound of trumpets."

In Jeremiah 31:4, God Himself tells the nation of Israel to "take up your tambourines and go out to dance with the joyful."

Principal England, with his Puritanical mindset, disgraces not only the educational system but also millions of rational Christians.

  1. WS States"He should resign and stay home "reading" the Playboy magazines I bet he has stashed in his sock drawer."

I bet he has playgirls or some type of fetish magazines instead of the hum drum playboy's.

He probably is into Cleveland Steamers!

  2. This is well and good if that boy, Tyler [or every teenager] will not go out into the world and would just stay in this myopic world of principal Tim.

But this is a world where there are young teenage girls, alcohol and drugs [and dancing too!]. How can one cope and build character [acting and doing the right thing when no one is looking]?

As Senior DeMolay and a Mason now, hanging out in the lodge gave me character building traits, tolerance for other people's beliefs, viewpoints and weaknesses.

    As always great post Brother!

  3. So a private Christian school doesn't have the right to uphold its own policies? The parents and student signed up knowing what the rules were. Now that they don't like the rules, they refuse to accept the consequences. Instead, they were likely called the TV station to put a little public pressure on the school.

Got to give credit for the principal to stick to his principles despite the heat.

Hey fellows, what about standing up for virtue and morality? You may not like the school's brand of virtue, but I hope you're even less likely to like that of the parents and students.

  4. The more articles that I read the more i understand. This is not really a Masonic website but a site used to demoralize and persecute christians. This is being done under the guise of promoting a fraternity that I have long been proud to be a member of. I would not be too terribly surprised to find that the webmater is actually an islamic radicalist. Keep your drivel to yourself and leave real masonry out of your attempts to demonize Christianity.

  5. 'rational Christians'

That's an oxymoron if ever I read one!

  6. I am thrilled that the author chooses to celebrate joy, But Kieron beat me to it - using the term "rational christians" throws a wrench into any reasoned response.

  7. Heads up, Michael Jackson might have faked his death. I have the video, taped from an early morning CNN broadcast (which has not since been repeated) that purports to prove it.

If this is true, this is big.

  8. I could go both ways on this one. I attended a very conservative Christian School that had identical policies. You are certainly correct that Christ spent time with morally degenerate folks, but this in no way means that he engaged in like behavior. Remember that his interactions with sinful folk ended with "go and sin no more" not an endorsement of or conformation to their lifestyle. The school's position is to promote a lifestyle of conformity to scripture. Having a rule such as the one prohibiting students from attending a secular prom is a measure of safeguarding not only the individual, but also the reputation of the school. Many organizations have similar rules. For example: I am a deputy sheriff. My sheriff has made it an informal policy that his deputies are not to frequent bars in our jurisdiction, to do so may result in unemployment. The need for the policy exists because of the decisions of a few foolish individuals. The same principle can be applied to the prom. BTW, I went to the prom in violation of my school's policy (don't ask, don't tell). I also worked as a school resource officer at our county's largest high school. I can say from personal experience and observation that not much good happens either at the prom or after the prom. The school has good reason for their policy. To liken King David's dancing before the Lord to what is passed off as "dancing" at the prom is way off base. I seriously doubt King David had females grinding on each of his legs to a tambourine playing Britney Spears' "Womanizer" or "If you seek Amy." Perhaps an alternative to prom would be in order - something that actually promoted something other than a supervised dash to third base in public. The school I went to had a Jr/Sr formal banquet, I would have like to have seen them take it a step farther with, dare I say it...ballroom dancing?
