What existed before existence came into existence?

Using a process similar to carbon dating, astronomers have determined that the star HE 1523-091 is nearly as old as the Universe itself.

Astronomers used a powerful telescope to measure radioactive elements thorium and uranium. They say the star, which is in our galaxy, is 13.2 billion years old. The Universe, according to most estimates, is 13.7 billion years old.

  1. Interestingly, Brother Joseph Smith, Jr., the Mormon Prophet, held that matter is eternal, and that The Heavenly Father created the universe out of preexisting, eternal matter.

  2. What existed before....?

Two Past Masters yelling: "That's not the way we did it in OUR Universe!"

  3. Nice article. Steve's comment on Joseph Smith, Jr., is apt, and it is worth noting that Bro. Joseph was a Master Mason.

I don't believe in a state of "non-existence." I think existence always has been, and simply is part of what is "reality."

I recognize God as a great organizer, or Great Architect in the literal sense after the manner of an earthly architect, building things with intelligence from existing material.

As for the two Past Masters yelling, perhaps they are the Elohim.

  4. God is that membrane we need to avoid our own annihilation. We are simply unable to comprehend certain phenomenon; yet we are able to recognize this blindness. To avoid terror we create comfort in its face. We create a God and words like 'eternal' and 'reality' and phrases to assuage the angst of a probing mind staring into the abyss.
